1/4 Scale Ferrari F1 Tipo type 049 V10 Model Engine
About this project
I’m trying to put this website together in an attempt to document the progress of the construction of a fully working Ferrari F1 2000 Tipo 049 V10 formula one engine in ¼ scale.
I started the project around two years ago and had little idea what I was letting myself in for.
Much of the last two years had been spent in learning the various processes involved from the design to production stage. When I started out, I had never used a CAD package before so one of the first challenges was to teach myself how to draw in 2D and then tackle 3D modelling. It very quickly became obvious that CNC machining would be necessary due to the complexity of some of the parts so the next step was to progress from manual milling to using a CAM system to control a CNC mill.
One of the first areas of concern was the fuel system. After scaling cross sectional images it became apparent that the injectors where something in the region of 4mm in diameter. There seemed little point on proceeding with the project if it was to prove impossible to use a proper fuel injection system. The first task was to read up on how they work and set about working out how miniature fuel injectors could be made.
